A child with ADHD in a Positive Behavior Setting Classroom with 1 teacher, four para pros, and 7 students, is triggered by a schoolwork timer going off then the teacher going against the rules and allowing another child that did not complete his schoolwork to have specials. Which, if you didn't know, children with ADHD can become obsessed with a sense of fairness and have a hard time letting it go. This should be easy. Even if the child has a meltdown, which in this case included hitting and spitting, these professionals should have had the training and resources to manage a child in crisis. Instead, these teachers brought in an SRO - 6’ 6” 300 LB special resource officer - who put the child in handcuffs, placed a spit bag over his head, and publicly humiliated him in front of his peers.
This is unacceptable! As we fight for fair treatment and justice for all, let's remember that that fight needs to be brought into the schools that are supposed to be a safe haven and source of nourishment for our children. How many hours of every weekday are our children being cared for and taught by strangers essentially? People we expect to be trained and educated. People we expect to care for our children and their wellbeing. People who, if found in violation of our children's basic rights, will be dealt with in an appropriate manner by the school, the department of education, or someone in authority who is supposed to be on the side of the child.
