Black Cinema

Black directors are interested in Black representation in film. Also, the public and private stories. How the private stories can reflect the public story and vice versa. There is also the level of just representation as people in a story. What level do we give marginalized historically marginalized people? Example of X-Men first Class where the first mutant to die is the black guy.

Also, the contacts. For example with black lives matter there are also films that examine black police officers. Also, if you were thinking of a historical film what's the context of that film? For example when Malcolm X came out.

Assignment ideas

Here I am on Christmas getting ideas

For non-fiction writing, zines, using different Memoir forms for burst writing, using flash nonfiction book, to use the first two months for a lot of burst writing, then the last month to concentrate on what one really wants to write. The challenge the one week diary

An example
The only person who can take my selfie is me. Who else really wants a picture of me at a time when I am ready for a picture of me to be taken? The selfie is an art form designed by the artist taking the selfie regarding SUBJECT in a world of OBJECTIFICATION. Are selfie haters those men who are acting out of Patriarchal power and women who can't get out of the embedded Patriarchy of our culture?

Selfies, then research, then pieces to accompany selfies

For black cinema: screenplay writing, zine, horoscope of a character, poetry, flash fiction, portrait of a director auteur, response writing, using a black scholar to continue ideas, writing via diversity,

Use the list of alternatives to finals. Making a website I would really love. That way we could see each others work but it would also be up to agree.

Climate crisis fiction?

So there are some writing that I've been doing when I was thinking that there was going to be someone from the future sending emails into my memoir. I'm wondering if I should just publish these small little pieces by themselves as fiction? They are both hilarious and scary. Especially love the idea of the Clones of Donald Trump.

Novel

On one side I'm going to take Andy Farkas is approach that if you make something funny people will still continue to follow along. On the other side I'm looking at books like the transformation by James Gordon which covers how we are all traumatized. I want my novel to be one of both humor while tackling some of the real problematic issues like trauma, domestic violence, sexual assaults, and climate crisis. All of this can be done through the movies.

Novel

What better way to look at concept building for the novel then to get a screen writing for dummies book and use their suggestions as chapter or section names. For example how to create a character.

It's funny as I just laid down the parameters of writing that I was only going to use third person or you. But today I see an invoice emerging so that's going to happen too. They are going to be the voices of the characters and an unknown aerator. Narrator.

Gone Girl

Slim mode of the novel with devices that seemed avant-garde at the time but are now Staples for the prestige Thriller. Unreliable narrators, structural twists, and a treatment of women's lives as being equally as exciting, unpredictable, and nuanced as men's. Princess things in the domestic sphere being about women and less worth our attention that idea is absolutely not true. So I love that there's now the term domestic Thriller. People argued about not just plot or character, but what it meant.

Part of the Novel

I just read about A24's Waves:

Waves will rip your heart out and then gently return it to you, fuller than before. Check theaters and get your tickets now!

I want a novel that does this. To make the centering of the novel about family, while other fun, scary, sad things happen.

My two mothers will be a part of this.

My father, too.

Don't these other character's have family?  Can't we include their story?

Topeka will become a part of this story. The filmmaker will not want to travel here, will not want to visit.

People leave, but what about those here?

Day 5

Day 5: Today's prompt uses movie trailers for writing about current events. I enjoy doing this, as a trailer shows a sample out of an entire movie's context, while engaging with a current-events context. For example, why not view the new Black Widow teaser trailer in terms of the Russian interference during the elections? I recommend, think of your current event, then browse through new movie trailers. Freewrite without worrying too hard about writing and have fun!

Novel plan

I have to admit, my fiction is bizarre. It is often character-based, characters with "nothing at stake" as a peer grade student would point out. They were my psychological issues seeking resolution, in reality, in fiction.

Which is why I am fascinated with hybrid books. I think I can pull off my real intention by writing such a book.

Andy Farkas is a true inspiration,  too.

My ideas: A love for movies
Characters struggling to be understood
Hidden traumas
Wanting to love and be loved by everyone
A love for maps
(Make maps of movie theatres?)
Movies changed through the decades
Time travel?
Two alternate stories, a third, a time travel mishap, a need to correct the third?
Because energy is neither created nor destroyed,  time is too
Time travel movies
Plots disintegrated like in movies, like in life
Lots of meta
Movie tropes that switch

The villain is the father
Heros journey and its holes

Somewhere in Time method of time travel?

Point out, "does it have a plot?" Movies

An overall title and approach.

Types of tropes i love
Revenge movies
Scifi movies
Character studies
Conspiracy theory

All three in the novel
Meta

Chicken Run is. Prison breakout movie!

Day 4

Poetry prompt for Day 4: One of our chosen family was in a car accident yesterday. She is okay, walked away from something she could have not. Today's poetry prompt begins with a freewriting about those chosen family, how we need them in our lives, how we grow together.

Day 3

Poetry prompt for Day 3: It's Giving Tuesday! I was thinking of a prompt for today when I passed one of those "Don't give up" signs. On the other side: "You are not alone." Giving Tuesday, but don't give up.

My prompt today is a choice, to think of all the ways "giving" is and play with that. Give up, give in, give of yourself.

Another choice is to alternate between repeating "don't give up" and "you are not alone."

Take a deep breath. Be good to yourself! This time of year can be depressing. The suicide prevention hotline is 1-800-273-8255. Please know you are not alone.

By the way, I did research to find the love-centered movement has an online shop selling ten signs for $70 (at cost).

Poetic Memoir

I am coming up with my Poetic Memoir Workshop set to be at the Lawrence Public Library.

Thinking of concepts before writing. Think of what matters to you, then how you can manifest yourself in both physical and imagined places.

Accept your imagination uses the same brain cell pathways as remembering the real.

Day 2

Poetry prompt for Day 2: 150 years ago today, abolitionist John Brown was hanged, executed on charges of treason, murder, and insurrection. He saw it as his mission in the name of God to begin a rebellion against slavery. Some people in Kansas do not know who John Brown is, even as his work started here during Bleeding Kansas. For many here, he is a historical icon. For others, he is a terrorist. Regardless, was he was an agent for the radical love of justice and change? Today’s prompt is: Who is a representative of radical love in your life? How have they changed your vision? Your heart? In what ways? Through the personal change, is there a systemic need to change too? What cultural oppression continues? What work for justice and change continues?

Day 1

Poetry prompt for Day 1: December 1st is a time for thinking of new beginnings for the month, but also the beginning of the end of the year. This prompt is a meditation of the things that have happened this year, as well as the things we hope for in its closing. Write an anaphora that begins every sentence with, "Let this December be . . . " Don't worry about being  metaphorical, but let the metaphors come as they will. Be good to yourself!

Compassion

Our students are stressed and exhausted. The one thing we can do to help out is give them self-care suggestions and time to complete assignments including the overall work they need to do outside of our own classes. Also, I don't believe in traditional finals. We need to find other ways to allow students to engage in their work other than giving them a test. Are we curmudgeons or collaborators? That's all!

Better

Follow your curiosity.
Find people riding in the same thing you are interested in, get their books, carry them with you.
Be sure to go slow, as it's not a race.
Write something, send it out, and when it comes back revised it and send it out again.
Be patient with people, especially yourself.
Remember the genre you're writing in, as well as what you are defying.

Finding angles

Again, when I feel like my poetry sucks I go to literary magazines I wish I were a part of and start examining those poems. Maybe this is a good practice, but I also know that I need to write what is real to me. I need to find my own way of phrasing. I can't rely on parlor tricks.

Taking It Easy

Just like the Eagles in their song, you sometimes have to take it easy. I'm realizing in my process I have to be very careful. I just found out about another Predator and the wound opens again. So I think just collecting the images and the text might be how I work right now. But I need to approach it alongside my at the movies project. I need to keep the resilience as well as the protective side, switching back and forth.

How does this junk man continue? Even in his poems, he is pointing out.

And you

perhaps don't like this poem: its free verse
or its narrative or the way it uses
gender or the heavy-handed
word-play of its title.

Like I care.

I wrote this for me.
―from "‘Try the Selfish'"

And we
don't like his poem or his free verse
narrative the way he uses women

his heavy-handed
 words about women
He doesn't care.

It's him.
