ets testing
Wednesday, October 16th at 9am
At the end of the spring semester, I sent an
email asking you to consider building in one class period for freshmen
students to take the ETS Proficiency Profile assessment during your Fall
EN 101 class(es). As you start to plan your
EN 101 syllabus for the Fall, please send me a list of the date(s) that
you were considering. These can be date(s) you will be at a conference,
or other planned absence(s).
The test is timed and takes 40 minutes. With
5-10 minutes for set-up and/or to fill out a personal profile, a 50
minute class period should be perfect. For those with a longer class
period, I would dismiss the students a bit early. The
assessment is administered online via the ETS testing site, and
students will need access to computers. We have a classroom/lab with
computers in the lower floor of Morgan Hall, MO 053, that we are able to
reserve for test taking. I would ask that the students
meet me there on the designated day to take the test.
If you are willing to give me a day, I will come
talk to your class for 5 minutes the class period prior to remind them
of the test. I’ll explain the purpose of the assessment and tell them
about the incentive!
The purpose of the ETS Proficiency Profile is to
measure students’ performance in critical thinking, reading, writing,
and mathematics. Aggregate results are used to review how our freshman
(and seniors who take the nonproctered version)
perform in these areas compared with the national sample of scores, and
our scores from previous years.
